BIOGRAPHY

Korb Dr. Donald Korb 

Dr. Korb has long believed that science is the foundation of clinical practice. A personal fascination and dedication to science has driven his clinical and research interests and given direction to a unique practice in Boston where he divides his time between the practice of Optometry and research. He has authored 100 publications in refereed scientific journals and over 40 US patents.

He directed research programs at Itek Corp. and Polaroid Corp. Among his primary accomplishments of contemporary significance are: the first membrane hydrophilic (soft) contact lens, the CSI lens, the grandfather of the modern soft lens and the model for 90% of all contemporary lens designs.; the nomenclature (naming) of meibomian gland dysfunction and the description of ductal obstruction, now recognized to be the primary cause of dry eye throughout the world; giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC); lid wiper epitheliopathy (LWE); non- obvious meibomian gland dysfunction; and ocular lipid technology products, including the currently marketed dry eye product, Systane Balance.

He has been active in teaching, with appointments at Boston University Medical School, New England College of Optometry, Schepens Eye Research Institute, and currently as Clinical Professor at the School of Optometry, University of California, Berkeley. He is recognized as an internationally acclaimed lecturer, researcher, inventor, innovator and clinician.

Included among over 40 Honors are: Regents Lecturer, University of California, Berkeley; National Optometry Hall of Fame, the annual Donald R. Korb Medal of the American Optometric Association and 2 honorary doctorates.

Korb has founded or co-founded 5 research companies. In 2006 he co-founded TearScience, a company dedicated to developing metrics and treatment for dry eye. In 2011 TearScience’s LipiFlow treatment was the first treatment cleared by the FDA for the treatment of the most common form of dry eye, evaporative dry eye. He currently serves as Chief Technical Officer and co-founder of TearScience, Inc.
